Meerut’s Special Task Force arrests UP don-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s kin in Rs 100 crore GST evasion case

The Meerut unit of the Special Task Force (STF) arrested a distant relative of the slain Uttar Pradesh gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed from his hotel in Meerut late Thursday night for alleged evasion of Goods and Services Tax (GST) to the tune of Rs 100 crore through several shell units.

STF Superintendent of Police Brijesh Singh said they arrested Qamar Ahmed Kazmi late Thursday night and handed him over to the Civil Lines police after sustained interrogation. Kazmi is a relative of jailed Dr Akhlaq Ahmed, who is the brother-in-law of Atiq Ahmed.

Akhlaq was a doctor in a state government hospital in Meerut before being dismissed following his arrest on April 2 for being a co-accused in the daylight murder of lawyer Umesh Pal and his police gunner in Prayagraj on February 24. The police claimed that the car used in the double murder belonged to Akhlaq.

STF sources said that Kazmi owns nearly eight industrial units for manufacturing high-quality glasses and he had floated several shell units through which he routed money because there is no GST on fledgling units to the tune of Rs 20 lakh for the first commercial transaction.

“We have shared details of tax evasion with concerned state government departments where the probe will begin from Friday to estimate the actual data of GST evasion,” said Singh.

The STF had also raided Kazmi’s premises in Meerut Cantonment last year in this connection and had seized several documents and laptops. “He took shelter in Dubai soon after the raid and we received information that he had come to the hotel owned by him Thursday evening from where we have arrested him,” SP Singh added.
