Supreme Court sets new record by disposing of over 52,000 cases in 2023
With Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud at the helm, the Supreme Court has managed to break its 2019 record for the most number of cases disposed of in a single year. In 2023, the SC managed to dispose of 52,191 cases, compared to 41,100 in 2019.
The 2023 record of 52,191 cases is also 28% higher than the 39,800 cases decided by the apex court in 2022.
Interestingly, during the same period in 2023, 49,191 cases were registered in the top court. In a rare feat, the SC has been able to dispose of more cases than were filed during the period at the court.
The year 2023 also saw as many as 17 constitution bench cases where the issue was decided, and the judgment was reserved. A constitution bench is defined as a bench with five or more SC judges. This feat brought down the pendency of five-judge-constitution bench matters from 36 to 19.
The key judgments delivered by constitution benches include the Abrogation of Article 370, the Demand for Same-Sex Marriage Rights, the Dispute between Delhi Govt and Centre on control over the national capital, and the Shinde vs Thackerya battle over the Maharashtra Assembly.
The Supreme Court has often cited the adoption of technology as a tool for speedier justice delivery.
